Ridgeland, Mississippi is approximately 17.7 square miles and home to around 20,173 residents. Home to shopping attractions such as Renaissance Center at Colony Park, Northpark Mall, and the Township at Colony Park, Ridgeland is located within Madison County.
Ridgeland was originally occupied by the Choctaw Indians, and was later used as a headquarters for the Confederate States’ Army under General Stephen Lee, the youngest Confederate lieutenant general during the Civil War. Later in the mid-1800’s, what would become Ridgeland was known as “Yellowley’s Crossing” after community founder James Yellowley. Shortly thereafter, Yellowley sold his community to two developers who, in turn, created “Highland Colony” and then “Ridgeland” with plans to encourage Northerners to settle further south. One of Ridgeland’s main roads is named Highland Colony Parkway in homage to the earlier settlement.
Ridgeland’s public school system is a part of the Madison County Public School District, it can be found online at: http://www.madison-schools.com. There is one public elementary school, one public middle school and one public high school. The public high school is Ridgeland High School. Ridgeland High School enjoys a “Level 5 (Superior Performance)” rating based on students’ test scores. Ridgeland is also home to the high school campus of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, a private school that was previously named in Time Magazine as one of the top one hundred schools in the nation. Other private schools such as Veritas School and Christ Covenant School are also located in Ridgeland. Ridgeland’s chief newspaper is the Madison County Herald.
Some of Ridgeland’s famous residents include four members of the country music sensation The Band Perry, who are from the city of Ridgeland.
