Canton, Mississippi
Historic Canton, Mississippi is located within Madison County. Canton’s nickname is the “City of Lights” due to the fantastic displays of Christmas lights in the wintertime. Canton is slightly larger than the city of Madison, comprised of about nineteen square miles. The population is 12,911. Canton, like Jackson, is an official stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail, specifically, Hickory Street, home of many blues venues, where musician Elmore James got his start.
Canton was also the home to civil rights activists such as George Raymond and Annie Bell Robinson Devine. Pittsburgh Steelers four time Super Bowl attendee L.C. Greenwood is also from Canton. While Canton has quite a history of prominent people, the city itself is also famous, having been featured in many popular movies. Films such as Mississippi Burning, A Time to Kill, My Dog Skip, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Ponder Heart, and Ballast were all filmed in Canton, Mississippi. The car company Nissan also opened a manufacturing plant in Canton.
The city itself centers around a square with many historic shops and homes, including a flea market on the weekends. Canton schools are governed by the Canton Public School District and include: two elementary schools, one middle school, Canton High School, Canton Educational, Canton School of Arts, and Canton Career Center.
